Dynamic colors and contemporary design mark Gary Brown’s creations in kiln-formed glass. The 526 Gallery in Saint Paul, MN will be featuring this Minnesota State Fair award-winning artist on Saturday, December 8, 2007.
Kiln-formed glass is a recent newcomer to the art scene. While blown glass has been available for millennia, only in the last decade have advances in material made kiln-formed glass possible. Moving from its origins in the Pacific Northwest, the “warm glass” movement is earning its place in the art world.
“As soon as I started working with kiln-formed glass I knew I’d found a medium that let me transfer my visions of light and color into something I could hold in my hand.” Brown said. “What excites me about glass is that I’m able to produce art that’s both pleasing to look at and can be used and touched. Creating pieces that are both aesthetically pleasing and functional is very important to me.”
Brown’s background in engineering gives him a unique skill set to work with the challenges that kiln-formed glass presents. His many years as a photographer have given him an eye for composition.
Brown’s work is on display in a number of Minnesota locations and can be viewed at his website, fusedlight.com. A number of his pieces were seen in the November 2007 Metro Magazine’s "Better than Santa's Workshop" guide to Twin Cities galleries. Gary Brown is a nearby neighbor to the 526 Gallery in the Selby-Dale neighborhood of Saint Paul, living in a 1903 Victorian house in the Historic Hill District.
